Great points all around. I would add that the science of archaeology looks at thing with a nearly 100% Euro perspective. There has been (and it is starting to change) a complete inability to look at settlement patterns and the definition of "agriculture" and "planning" and "town" in ways not defined by European and middle eastern perspective. Settlement patterns of complex, high density civilizations are hard to see when the perspective is so narrow. Hence the missing out on much of what went on in North America.
This is just fascinating! You are right, so little attention is paid to prehistoric cultures in America, focusing rather on South America or the civilisations at the time of the "discovery" by Europeans.
